Overview

The Cataloging department provides discoverability of all materials in all formats to users of the BookOps member libraries who search the public online catalog.  Materials are discoverable if they are cataloged correctly and accurately for author, title, subject and series access, in formats utilized by the ILS, thereby making more materials available to more library users in both NYPL and BPL circulating collections as well as Research collections.

The Supervising Librarian position is responsible for original and complex copy cataloging of materials in all formats for the Research Collections of NYPL. The position is also responsible for supervision of Senior Librarians as well as Collections Cataloging Associates/Assistants who perform copy cataloging on the Fast Track team, and includes eTime approval and scheduling plus training of staff. A significant component of this position pertains to cataloging of world language materials, particularly Romance and German language resources.

Principal Responsibilities

Reporting to the Cataloging Manager, the Supervising Librarian will:

  • Supervise and assign work to the Fast Track team of copy catalogers.
  • Perform original and complex copy cataloging of all formats for discovery and access
  • Interpret and apply Library of Congress subject headings, Billings classification, RDA, and OCLC rules in cataloging and classifying library materials
  • Assist in daily cataloging maintenance tasks, including creation and editing of bibliographic records and responding to ServiceNow tickets or assigning same to staff
  • Assist with answering cataloging questions from department staff and other Collection Management departments
  • Train cataloging staff in standards and use of OCLC bibliographic utility and Sierra ILS
  • Create personal name headings in compliance with NACO specifications
  • Plan and execute special cataloging assignments, and contribute to the development of procedures, manuals, and reports
  • Record cataloging production statistics
  • Complete performance evaluation of staff as required
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned

Required Education & Experience

  • ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MLS, MLIS) and relevant professional cataloging work experience required to successfully perform the principal responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of RDA, AACR2, Library of Congress Subject and Name headings, Dewey Decimal Classification, MARC formats and principles of authority control
  • Reading knowledge of one or more non-English languages, especially Romance and German languages
  • Experience with an online ILS system (preferably Innovative’s Sierra) and an online bibliographic utility such as OCLC Connexion
  • Experience with a MARC conversion and text editing tool such as MarcEdit
  • Familiarity with emerging trends and issues in cataloging
  • Demonstrated knowledge of an online ILS cataloging module such as Sierra
  • Proficient experience using Microsoft Office software
  • Flexibility in adapting to changeable cataloging needs and priorities
  • Strong organizational and planning skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work under pressure, problem solve, and prioritize cataloging tasks
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in working tactfully with other library staff in a team setting
  • Critical judgment skills in cataloging responsibilities

Work Environment

  • Ability to move book trucks and handle materials that may weigh up to 30 lbs.
  • May require travel within NYC
