Join the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at UNC Chapel Hill in Prague, London, or Dublin and Berlin during summer 2017! Look behind the scenes at libraries throughout England or the Czech Republic, or explore the inner workings of global corporations (possibilities include Facebook, Google, and Red Hat) in Germany and Ireland. Our programs offer both students and professionals an opportunity to deepen their knowledge and understanding of information or library science in a global context.

WHO? You! Undergraduates, graduates, UNC students, non-UNC students, and professionals all welcome and eligible to enroll. Know someone who might be interested? Send them this email!

WHAT? International seminars allowing you to study information science or library science in a global context: 2 weeks of organized tours and activities led by SILS faculty and faculty at our partner iSchools abroad.

WHEN? Late May – early June. (Dublin/Berlin runs May 22 – June 6, 2017; Prague or London runMay 21 – June 3, 2017.)

WHY? Deepen your knowledge of the information professions, earn 3 hours of credit toward your degree, and spend your summer seeing part of the world!

All seminars offer a unique, behind-the-scenes, hands-on experience. Participants generally have evenings and weekends free to explore on their own.

Our seminars are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and they tend to fill quickly. Early registration is encouraged. Questions can be directed to Kaitlyn Murphy, SILS International Programs Coordinator, kmurphy@unc.edu; detailed information on cost, program activities, and schedules can be found in the links below.

Dublin/Berlin Seminar
May 22 – June 6, 2017
Our only multi-city seminar focuses on the ways information gathering, dissemination, privacy, and security affect business. While being immersed in the culture of two fascinating European cities, the program allows you the opportunity to see successful corporations through business visits, and you’ll also have an opportunity to network. While we are still confirming the exact locations of our visits, possibilities include Facebook, Red Hat, Google, and others, including startups. The program is in partnership with the iSchools at University College Dublin and Humboldt University in Berlin. No language requirement.

Prague Seminar
May 21 – June 3, 2017
Prague offers lectures and tours related to librarianship in a country that deals with a history of monarchy, empire, Communism, and the meeting of east and west. Participants experience firsthand how the democratization of the Czech Republic, formerly a communist state, has affected the accessibility of information. The program is offered in partnership with Charles University. No language requirement.
